Encore
Encore acts as an incentive to build new partnerships between performers and composers and ensures new works continue to reach a variety of audiences. Please note: The guidelines and application process for this program have recently been revised. October 1, 2010 postmark application deadline.
Encore helps sustain and expand contemporary repertoire by subsidizing multiple performances of new works that have had a limited performance history. As the name Encore suggests, submitted works must have received a premiere performance, but should not have received more than a few (2-6) additional performances.

The two primary goals of Encore are:
  • To act as an incentive to assist composers in securing post-premiere performances that are vital to building a career.
  • To create new relationships between composers and performers that have not previously existed, giving the composer valuable opportunities for new artistic partnerships while introducing her/his music to new audiences.
By encouraging individual performers and ensembles to add newly created works to their repertoires, the program assists composers in securing the consistent performances that build and sustain their careers, and helps nurture relationships between composers and performers of new music.

Composers and performers apply jointly, and performers are required to work with composers whose music they have not previously performed. Performers are encouraged to explore ways of integrating the work into settings where new music is seldom heard and to use creative or innovative programming should the work be presented in a more traditional concert setting.

Though Encore will rarely provide full financing for projects, it directly supports performances and helps composers and performers leverage additional funding. The awards are made to the performers and may be used for rehearsal and performance-related costs as well as involving the composer in the entire process.

Grants awarded in the October funding cycle are meant to support performances beginning January - June, 2011.

Who may Apply
  • Composers and performers based in the United States (proposed performances may occur outside of the country).
  • Performers and composers apply jointly. Please use the Encore application form (download from the link at right).
  • Application materials from the performer and composer may be sent in the same envelope, or may be sent separately.
  • Applicants do not need to be members of ACF to apply. However, if selected, the composer and performer are expected to be a member for a one-year period. (For membership information visit www.composrsforum.org or call 651/228-1407.)
To be eligible:
  • The performer must not have previously performed any of the composer's music.
  • The conductor (if applicable) must not have previously conducted any of the composer's music.
  • The performer and composer must not be based in the same state.
  • The piece must not have been commissioned by the performer (NOTE: for the purposes of this program, a "commission" is defined as any piece which is created at the request and/or instigation of the performer, regardless if monetary or other tangible benefits are attached).
  • The piece may have received a few post-premiere performances (2-6) by other ensembles.
  • The same work may not receive Encore funding for more than one performer or ensemble.
  • Recipients must fulfill all previous Encore contracts before reapplying to the program and may only receive funding once each fiscal year.
Grants from $500 to $2,000 are made to performers to perform a work a minimum of three times during an 18-month period.
  • Performers may apply for funds to cover any expenses directly related to rehearsing and performing the piece (including bringing the composer to rehearsals and/or performances).
  • Grant amounts vary according to the length, difficulty of the work, and number of performances and other promotional activities proposed. As a rough guide:
    o a soloist may receive $500-$1,000,
    o a chamber group (3-8 performers) $1,000-$1,500,
    o and a larger ensemble $1,500-$2,000.
Selection criteria include:
  • The quality of both the performer's and the composer's work samples,
  • The performer's dedication to promoting the work, as evidenced by the total number of proposed performances, other promotional activities (i.e. broadcasts and recordings), and possibility of incorporating the piece into the performer's permanent repertoire,
  • The potential for reaching new audiences through the performer's plans to integrate the work into settings where new music is seldom heard and to utilize creative or innovative programming should the work be presented in a more traditional concert setting.
