SONIC CIRCUITS
Sonic Circuits: International
Festial of Electronic Music and Art provides national and international
venues and exposure for composers and performers (including students)
who are working in electronic media. It offers audiences an opportunity
to sample innovative and experimental electronic music, incorporating
the latest artistic uses of technology. It also facilitates presenters
in the production of relatively low cost events involving high quality
programming material.Sonic Circuits, arguably the largest festival
of its kind, differs from other others in that it consists of a traveling,
curated pool of works that forms the basis of events occurring across
the States and abroad throughout the year. Recent festival sites have
included Salzburg (Austria), Norwich (UK), Perth (Australia), Starkville
(MS), Los Angeles, Boston, Chicago, Minneapolis, Aspen, Akron (OH), Worcester
(MA), Mount Dora (FL), Athens (GA), Tacoma (WA), and St. Cloud
(MN).
The
Forum annually curates a roster from which programs are selected throughout
the year. This structure allows for multiple performances and a broad
representation of composers. Entries are categorized as: (1) "tape"
alone, (2) video art, (3) live acts, and (4) scored works. The
roster of worksis made available to presenters for their own programming
in the form of an innova compact disc, a video tape, and a list
of recommended performers and realizable scores. The CD is sent to radio
stations around the world and is also distributed commercially on the
innova label.
Now in its ninth season,
Sonic Circuits has expanded the range of venues receptive to
cutting-edge electronic art and widened access to an especially volatile
genre of contemporary music. Each year three new works are commissioned
for presentation during the season. Sonic Circuits is supported
in part by the National Endowment for the Arts and the Jerome Foundation.
