JEROME
COMPOSERS COMMISSIONING PROGRAM
Apply
Now for the 2003 Program!
The
Composers Commissioning Program (CCP) supports creation of new works by emerging
composers by underwriting the composers' commissioning fees. Composers apply to
CCP in conjunction with a performing organization (a soloist or a group). Alternatively,
composer-performer-improvisers may apply in conjunction with a presenting organization.
The program thus fosters cooperative ventures.CCP welcomes applicants working
in all musical genres, including jazz, experimental, contemporary classical, improvised,
and international styles, and seeks to expand new-music culture beyond the conventional
venues.
The program is
funded by the St. Paul-based Jerome Foundation, which focuses on emerging artists
in Minnesota and New York City. ("Emerging" composers are defined as being at
an early stage of their careers, without established national reputations. CCP
is intended to be among a composer's first commissions and provide a significant
career boost.) Composers residing in Minnesota or the five boroughs of New York
City may apply with performers based anywhere in the world. Composers residing
elsewhere must work with Minnesota-based performers. Similar geographic restrictions
apply to composer-performers applying with a presenter.
Grants
generally range from $1,500 to $8,000. Since CCP rarely covers the entire cost
of a commission, performers are encouraged to pursue other funding sources to
supplement the composer's fee.
Grantees are chosen by a three-member panel that changes annually. The Forum strives
to select panelists with wide knowledge of new music who are diverse in their
stylistic predilections, ethnic backgrounds, gender, and places of residence.
