Dorland Mountain Arts Colony encourages visual artists, poets,
writers, playwrights, composers, photographers and other artists to apply for
one- to two-month residencies. Dorland provides each artist with an individual
cottage containing a simple kitchen, bathroom, living and working areas. Dorland
is about eight miles from the town of Temecula and offers miles of natural trails,
a spring-fed pond, scenic overlooks, and an eclectic library. The cottages have
no electricity and are heated by woodstoves and lit by kerosene lamps. Stoves,
water heaters, and refrigerators are fueled by propane. Dorland provides basic
kitchen utensils, linens, and house wares. Firewood, propane, wicks, and fuel
are included in the modest cottage donations. Artists provide their own food and
artist's materials. The average residency is one month. Shorter residencies are
discouraged. Occasionally, three-month residencies are scheduled. Dorland charges
a cabin donation for all residencies: $450 per month, with half (non-refundable)
of your residency payable six months prior to your stay. The balance will be due
upon your arrival. No children or pets allowed. Visitors are allowed only by prior
approval of staff (children cannot stay overnight) and there is a $20 fee per
night, per guest. Spouses and collaborators can reside together at Dorland; however,
they must apply and be accepted separately. Privacy is paramount at Dorland. Residents
are never disturbed in their cottages, except in an emergency. Residents communicate
by placing notes in each other's on site mailboxes. Dorland provides a local-only
telephone for the residents, which can be used with toll-fee calling card access
to make long-distance calls. Many residents find that bringing their own cell
phone is helpful. Applications are reviewed twice a year: September 1 and March
1, with notification by May 15 and November 15 respectively. For applications,
go to <www.ez2.net/dorland/application.html> or send a request and SASE
to Admissions Committee, Dorland Mountain Arts Colony, P.O. Box 6, Temecula, CA
