Miscellaneous

Disclaimer: "General Opportunities" lists opportunities ar far in advance as possible, so that members may have maximum time to respond. Deadlines shown in boldface type are for receipt of materials unless "postmark" is specified. "SASE" indicates that a self-addressed, stamped envelope should be included for return of application materials. If a date does not include a year, it is within the following 12 months.

The symbol $$$ signals a competition or other program that assesses a fee for application or participation. The Forum endorses neither these programs nor others that limit participation on the basis of age, sex or similar criteria.

The deadline for submitting listings to this section is the first of the month preceding publication. Individuals and organizations submitting announcements are asked to include full contact information (i.e., a mailing address and telephone number, not simply an e-mail address).

Due to space limitations, only basic information can be included in these columns. Also, the Forum receives these listings from a number of sources, including e-mail. International characters are sometimes changed during Internet transfer. As such, readers are urged to contact sponsors for full guidelines before applying, especially when anonymous entry is required. The Forum makes every effort to ensure the accuracy of listings but is not responsible for errors or omissions or for any misrepresentations. Please mention Sounding Board or the American Composers Forum when applying.

December 15
The 2004 Experience Music Project Pop Conference (Seattle, WA, April 15 - 18, 2004) invites submissions of papers and other kinds of presentations that closely examine specific musical moments, past and present, across any genre. The idea is to bring to the surface aspects of musical experience that often get subsumed in tidier accounts. All perspectives are welcome: political, literary, musicological, historical, sociological, aesthetic, identity-based, and beyond. This year's conference will serve as the basis of a future special issue of Popular Music devoted to questions of style and perspective in music writing. This gathering connects an unusually broad range of academics, journalists, musicians, industry figures, and anyone else interested in ambitious music writing that crosses disciplinary walls. The 2002 conference inspired a book, "This is Pop," due out in 2004 on Harvard University Press. A second book, based around the 2003 and current conference, is under development. Maverick suggestions are welcome, as well as performance ideas. Nearly any form of technological presentation can be accommodated. Proposals should include a roughly 250 word abstract of the paper, a brief biography of the presenter, preferred affiliation/title, and complete contact info. Send proposals to Eric Weisbard at EricW@emplive.com. Web: www.emplive.com/visit/education/popConf.asp.

Artofthestates.org - a contemporary-music Web site from WGBH Radio featuring complete works of American art music - offers unprecedented access to cutting-edge American art music and lesser-known American classics of the last century. The complete works on artofthestates.org, some up to 70 minutes long, span the American musical repertoire from orchestral music, chamber music, and songs to electronic, jazz- and rock-influenced, and experimental pieces. Almost a third of the pieces on artofthestates.org are unavailable on commercial CD. To provide the most vivid listening experience, the pieces stream at the highest bit rate possible for each user's connection and are processed to maintain their dynamic range. The pieces are supported by a range of materials including biographies of the composers and performers, extensive notes on the pieces, and links to a variety of related Web sites. A user-friendly search function allows visitors to explore the repertoire by composer, performer, instrumentation, decade, genre, or keyword. Those interested are encouraged to explore the site and pass along comments to Matthew Packwood, Associate Producer, Art of the States, 125 Western Ave., Boston MA 02134. Tel.: (617) 300-2329. E-mail: matt_packwood@wgbh.org. Web: www.artofthestates.org.

The Composer-Conductor Bridge Web site is intended to help conductors locate new scores that are of high quality, inexpensive, and suitable for performance by their ensembles. Many such scores are unpublished, unperformed, and written by composers who are not well known. More than 300 composers and 20 composer organizations are represented at the site. Submitting a conductor inquiry (call for scores) is easy. There's an online form to specify criteria - including instrumentation, duration, level of difficulty, and cost. There's also an online score search tool that allows users to review basic information on more than 340 new works. Each entry includes information about the piece and composer contact information, including a live e-mail link. New features specify whether parts are available for sale, rental, or free and whether any additional fees apply. Those interested in finding good new works by living composers should visit the Web site, www.music-usa.org/ccbridge/.
