PHILADELPHIA CHAPTER: About Founded: October 1997 Building a visible presence for new music and supporting local composers and performers, the Philadelphia Chapter dedicates its activities to the spirit of collaboration and connection. It connects composers to other composers and artists, to the resources available in the community, and with new audiences in a fresh and innovative fashion. In addition to hosting monthly meetings for composers to meet and network, the Chapter sponsors events such as Poets and Composers: Listening to Each Other, exchanges between poets and composers; Collaborations, co-hosted with Dance Alliance featuring collaborative works of local composers and choreographers; and Composer to Composer, co-hosted by The Philadelphia Orchestra. The Chapter programs continue to have a substantial impact on Philadelphia's musical community. Featured on NPR's "All Things Considered," the Chapter was credited for the growing interest and visibility of new music in Philadelphia. The Community Partners program continues to fund projects that have encompassed teaching elements of jazz and improvisation, creating a new work for a local community band, and working with homeless women and their families. In a Philadelphia Weekly feature article, the Chapter was described as "spear-heading initiatives aimed at both existing and future audiences" and was cited for providing opportunities for Philadelphia composers to grow and learn.
