Genre: Primarily Choral

Introduction:
Thank you for taking the time to think about my work. Let me know if you'd like to see or hear anything.

Biography:
David Harris BSE, MM, DMA has worked with choral and instrumental groups for more than fifteen years and with ensembles of all ages and ability levels including religious, community, collegiate, high school, youth, and professional vocal and instrumental ensembles. He currently serves as the artistic director for Jubilate, an a cappella chorus in Boulder, and associate artistic director for the Denver Bach Society.

As a composer and arranger, David has written primarily for choral ensembles (including a cappella and those with accompaniment for brass ensemble, string ensemble, piano, organ and rhythm combo) for over ten years. His early works include a Christmas Cantata, written in 1998, and a collection of arrangements. More recent compositions and arrangements reflect his interest in an array of musical styles.

Over the past five years with Jubilate David has performed and recorded a number of his compositions and arrangements. Their three CDs, "Sing For Joy," "We As Advent People," and "Let It Shine," are available on CDbaby.com and itunes. In addition to performing weekly with Jubilate, David often serves as a choral clinician and fulfills composition commissions throughout the year. His degrees are from the University of Alabama, Oklahoma and Colorado respectively. Areas of focused study include early American music, Stravinsky and Baroque and Renaissance performance practice. David co-authored the book "In The Good Old Summer Time" with Thomas Riis in 2006.

Artist's Statement:
In my compositional work, like in my concert programming, I strive to engage performers and audience alike through variety and accessibility. I borrow from other composers, present and past, in as much as I look for the essence of their artistry in an attempt to determine what makes their music work. I believe that past music is past, and, as beautiful as it is and as much as I enjoy performing it, there are always new answers to musical questions. An artist's goal should be to find newness within the confines of our musical language. I am inspired by the work of past composers as well as contemporary performers from singer-songwriters to jazz composers and experimental innovators. Ultimately music must reach people where they are and bring them to a new experience. The trick, for me, is determining where people might be and offering a product that can both reach and inspire them.
