Biography:
Ju-Yong Ha, born in Seoul, South Korea, is a prolific composer whose compositions have been performed in concerts to critical acclaim and enthusiastic acceptance in Seoul, New York, Boston, San Francisco, Santa Fe, New Mexico, and Hartford, Connecticut, where his music won the New World Chamber Ensemble composition competition sponsored by the Hartford Symphony Orchestra. His formal academic training began in Korea where he studied both Western composition and Korean traditional music. He then came to the United States to pursue his graduate studies in composition and music theory, and has worked with leading contemporary composers including David Del Tredici, James Sellars, and Stephen Gryc. The primary influence on his compositional output has always been the genres and styles of Korean traditional music, and this is revealed in the distinctive sound, rhythms and colors which enliven his compositions and provides a focal point for all listeners. Mr. Ha is also dedicated to scholarly work in music theory, especially the music of Mozart and Strauss, and in ethnomusicology, specializing in Korean music, and has published articles in the journals of "Music and Culture" and "Asian Music Research". In addition he has been invited to present his work at international conferences. In October 2003, he gave a paper on the traditional Korean vocal genre p'ansori at the annual meeting of the Society for Ethnomusicology, and in November 2005, his paper on Korean kisaeng (female performers, entertainers and courtesans), and their musical contributions to p'ansori performance, was presented at the annual SEM meeting. In March 2006, he presented a paper on p'ansori performance practice at the Society for Ethnomusicology Southern California Chapter (SEMSCC) at UC San Diego. He has been a guest lecturer in ethnomusicology at the University of Hartford and Union College. In 2001 he also made his debut performance on kayagum (the Korean 12-string zither) at Alice Tully Hall, and he continues to perform with the Korean Traditional Performing Arts Association in New York, where he serves as Executive Director. Ju-Yong Ha is currently a doctoral candidate at the Graduate Center of the City University of New York, completing his dissertation on the modal system of Korean traditional folk genres, and composing a large orchestral composition. For the last five years he has taught music as an adjunct professor at City College of New York and New York College of Technology, and most recently, he has been a faculty member of the music Department of Baruch College in New York.
