Biography:
Joseph F. Di Ponio (b. 1972) has composed music for concert performance, theater, art installations, and silent films. His collaborations with the director Carla Stockton and the video artist Christa Erickson have earned him a reputation for being able to effectively translate literary and visual images into a versatile and evocative musical discourse. His concert music can be heard on solo and chamber music recitals throughout the U.S. and Canada, and is often inspired by the visual arts, especially the paintings of Barnett Newman, the video installations of Gary Hill, and the sculptures of Richard Serra. He has taught at Central Connecticut State University and is currently teaching interdisciplinary courses in music and art at SUNY Stony Brook and Stony Brook Manhattan. His most recent project is a multimedia work for two singers, 18 instruments and live video processing.

Mr. Di Ponio holds degrees in composition from Western Michigan University and The Hartt School. He is currently a Ph.D. candidate in music composition and philosophy at SUNY Stony Brook. His primary teachers include C. Curtis-Smith, Ramon Zupko, Robert Carl, and James Sellars, Sheila Silver, Daria Semegen, and Dan Weymouth. He has also studied aesthetics and art history with Hugh Silverman and Donald Kuspit.
