Introduction:
William Campbell (Assistant Professor of Music at St. Ambrose University) is an improviser and composer of music for theater, dance, film and the concert stage.

Biography:
Born in Atlanta in 1969, William Campbell has lived most of his life in the Western US, and recently moved from Tucson, Arizona where he was a professional performer and composer. He is an Assistant Professor of Music at St. Ambrose University in Davenport, Iowa, teaching music theory and composition. Prior to this appointment he taught at Southwest Missouri State University, and Pima Community College.

As a composer, his works have been performed on stage by orchestras and new music groups, recorded for theater productions and film, and sung in churches nationwide. A talented pianist and improviser, he has also performed in multiple new music groups, including the accalaimed Sonoran Consort.

This year's performances include the premiere of a new piece for Concert Band, "Coyote Dances With a Star," premiered by the Southwest Missouri State University Wind Ensemble in April. An electro-acoustic work, "Trickster Dances" was commissioned by New ARTiculations Dance Company, and premiered in June. His current composing projects include music for a documentary film, a children's piece for narrator and orchestra and a large multi-movement work, Coyolchaque ReMembers, for the Latina Dance project, to be premiered in January.

Performances of William's sacred vocal music continue in multiple churches throughout the world that utilize various anthems and liturgical settings. His works are available on CD, on his website, and in publications by Chalice Press and Episcopal Church Publishing.

In 2003, Campbell was awarded an Excellence in Teaching award from Pima Community College in Tucson. The year prior, he was awarded the Outstanding Graduate Scholar in Composition from the University of Oregon, where he earned his Ph.D. He was also a recipient of special honor for the Waging Peace International Competition for his choral work, Deep Peace to You. In 1999 the Tucson/Pima Arts Council presented him with the Performing Arts Fellowship in Music Composition.

His orchestral awards include the 1995 Jim Highsmith Award from the San Francisco Conservatory of Music for his piece, Sinfonietta. In 1993 his first orchestral work, Transparency of the Veil, received a performance by the University of Arizona orchestra and the Presidents Award by the university. He holds degrees in music composition from the University of Oregon (Ph.D.), San Francisco Conservatory of Music (M.M) and the University of Arizona (B.M), and has studied with Robert Kyr, David Crumb, Elinor Armer, David Conte, Conrad Susa, Daniel Asia, and Timothy Kloth.
