Biography:
Greg Bartholomew's music has been performed across the United States and in Canada, Europe and Australia. His choral works have been premiered by such ensembles as The Esoterics, the Oregon Repertory Singers, the Ars Brunensis Chorus, the William & Mary Choir, and the American University Chamber Singers, and has received performances by Seattle Pro Musica, Octarium, Austin Vocal Arts Ensemble, and the Seattle Bach Choir as well as readings by the Gregg Smith Singers at the Adirondack Festival of American Music and by the Princeton Singers at the Oxford Summer Institutes at Lehigh. His choral setting of text From the Odes of Solomon has been released on CD by Capstone Records. Connecticut Choral Arts (Concora) will include "The 21st Century (A Girl Born in Afghanistan)" on their CD "Songs and Stories of Liberation" to be released in early 2007.
Commissioned by the Oregon Bach Festival Composer's Symposium in celebration of George Crumb's 75th birthday, Bartholomew's "String Trio for George Crumb" was premiered by Third Angle in July 2004, and received a second performance by the Accessible Contemporary Music Ensemble in Chicago in April 2005. His instrumental work "The Far North Land: Passages for violas in six parts" was selected for performance at the 30th International Viola Congress in June 2002. A version of the same work for string quartet was premiered by the OdeonQuartet at Seattle's Town Hall in October 2003. That concert also featured the premiere of Bartholomew's "Suite for Razumov (Act One)," for clarinet and string quartet, which was subsequently recorded by members of the Kiev Philharmonic for release on the "Masterworks of the New Era" CD series. "On the Ground Where We Live" was awarded the Masterworks Prize by ERM Media and has been recorded by the Czech Republic for the "Masterworks of the New Era" CD series.
Born in 1957, Bartholomew earned degrees from the College of William & Mary in Virginia and the University of Washington. He has participated in composition workshops, seminars and symposia with Krzysztof Penderecki, George Crumb, Bob Chilcott, Steven Sametz, Robert Kyr, R. Murray Schafer, Tan Dun, Gregg Smith, Hummie Mann, Gloria Swisher, and Brent Michael Davids. He currently studies with David Paul Mesler (composition) and Teo Benson (violin). Bartholomew has received funding from Meet the Composer as well as annual ASCAP Awards in 2003, 2004 and 2005 for the recent performances of his music.
Bartholomew's music is published by Ars Nova Music and Burke & Bagley and is available on CDs released by ERM Media and Capstone Records. He is a member of the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP), the Seattle Composers Alliance, the Washington Composers Forum, the American Composers Forum, the Society of Composers, Inc., the American Music Center, and Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia. He has sung since 1991 with Seattle Pro Musica, an award-winning critically-acclaimed choral ensemble under the direction of Karen P. Thomas.
Recent Works:
Bartholomew's "Beneath the Apple Tree" won the 2006 Orpheus Music Competition for new music for recorder. This 3-minute piece, for alto recorder and bass viol da gamba, was commissioned by Noreen Jacky as present for her husband on the occasion of their 25th wedding anniversay. The piece is also available in arrangements for flute & cello and for flute & guitar.
