2010 ASCAP EXPO in Los Angeles

ASCAP invites registrants to their "I Create Music ASCAP Expo" Conference in Los Angeles, April 22-24, 2010, at the Renaissance Hollywood Hotel. Master classes, songwriting and composing workshops, publisher and business panels, One-on-One sessions, DIY career building workshops, showcases and performances, song feedback panels, state-of-the-art technology demos as well as leading music industry exhibitors. Please note: the lowest Early Bird pricing for the 2010 ASCAP "I Create Music" EXPO will expire on November 30. Those who wish to attend the conference should book early to take advantage of the lowest rates.

1st Annual Composition Competition
(June 1, 2009)

ACF-LA announces a call for unpublished chamber scores  for any combination of flute, clarinet, oboe, violin, viola, cello, bass, percussion from all ACF member composers in two categories (over and under age 18) for their 1st Annual Composition Competition and performance organized by ACF/LA in conjunction with Ensemble Green and the Ruskin Art Club.  Selected composers will have the opportunity to attend rehearsals, a professional performance of their work in the Fall of 2009 and receive an archival recording of the performance.

Los Angeles composer Roger Matthew Brown and six others selected for Essentially Choral reading sessions with Philip Brunelle's VocalEssence Ensemble Singers in Minneapolis.

acf/LA members get SF Symphony tickets

On January 27, 2009, twenty-eight acf/LA composers were given free tickets to the San Francisco Symphony performance at Walt Disney Hall in Los Angeles.

Encore awards for January 2009
(January 1, 2009)

Guitarist Michael Partington (Seattle, Wa.) will perform "West" by Michael Karmon (Redondo Beach, Calif.) and flutist Timothy Hagen (Los Angeles, Calif.) will perform "Hibakusha" by Aaron Alon (Houston, Texas) as a result of the latest round of Encore grants.

Rehearsal Sessions at Disney Hall
(December 1, 2008)

On Saturday, November 8, 2008, a handful of LA composers attended the dress rehearsal at Disney Hall for "Spiral XII: "Space Between Heaven and Earth," a new work by Chinary Ung performed by the LA Master Chorale and conductor Grant Gershon. On Wednesday, November 12, 2008, ACF/LA composers attended a Los Angeles Philharmonic rehearsal with composer/conductor Thomas Adès of his music at Disney Hall in Los Angeles.

House Concert in Culver City

The Los Angeles-based Calder String Quartet performed at acf/LA's first house concert in support of local new music and new music ensembles.

FNCI in Los Angeles

Once a week for three semesters during the 2007/2008 school year, CANOE placed Native composers in classrooms in Minnesota and California: Brent Michael Davids (Mohican), Elizabeth Jaakola (Anishinaabe), and Raven Chacon (Dine) worked with students in Minneapolis and the Fond du Lac reservation (Cloquet, Minn.) and at a venue shared with Native Voices at the Gene Autry Theater in Orange County, Los Angeles.

FNCI wins FAITA Award in Los Angeles

On May 3, 2008, the Forum's First Nations Composer Initiative (FNCI) received the Will Sampson Memorial Award from First Americans in the Arts (FAITA) during their 16th Annual Award Presentation and Dinner held at the Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills, Calif. FNCI was nominated for its outstanding composer-in-residence work with Los Angeles area Native youth.

2008 Encore awards include Altadena composer Patricio da Silva and Greeley, Colorado pianist Lei Weng; Los Angeles composer Joseph Trapanese and Flexible Music (Yonkers, N.Y.); and Los Angeles composer Peter Michael von der Nahmer and percussionist Erik Barsness of St. Paul, Minnesota.

acf/LA's 25th Composers Salon
(August 1, 2007)

acf/LA's 25th Composers Salon was held on July 21, 2007, at the Tuttomedia Studio in Venice. Attendance was very impressive, with every seat taken and composers lining the back wall and every available square foot of floor space.
